Dr. Ashish Shanbhag Weighs In on Opioid Epidemic in a Community Event at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center

National Spine & Pain Centers (NSPC)’ Dr. Ashish Shanbhag recently participated as a guest speaker in a community event at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center, Woodbridge, Virginia on November 16, 2017. Sentara called the event Project STOP (Speaking Out Teaching Opioid Prevention).

There were several speakers from the community at the event and Dr. Shanbhag was one of their highlighted guest speakers. The event was focused on educating the community on our local opioid epidemic and how we can do our part to fight against it. About 50 guests attended the event including Emergency Department (ED) Physicians and community members.

Topics discussed were the following:

  • Incorporate emergency medicine and how non-opioid pain management can make an impact on the epidemic in the community
  • Chronic pain in the emergency setting, pain patient with acute pain in the ER
  • Narcan: reversak agent for OD’s the future of it.

Board certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation as well as Pain Medicine, Dr. Shanbhag treats the spectrum of spine, joint, nerve, muscle, and soft tissue pain, with an emphasis on the therapeutic treatment of spinal disease. His expertise includes image-guided procedures such as epidural injections, facet blocks, radiofrequency neuroablation, provocation discography, spinal cord stimulators, nerve blocks, joint injections, and soft tissue injections.
