About

Primary Specialties: Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Sports Medicine

Dr. Yailiz B. Calderin is driven in her work by seeing patients thrive and return to the activities they enjoy the most. “I look forward to the day when my patients arrive with news like ‘I went back to playing tennis’ or ‘I was able to enjoy vacations with my grandkids thanks to you!’ It makes me very happy and shows I was able to help them.”

After completing a sports medicine fellowship at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg in Florida including providing sideline medical coverage during athletic events, she joined the National Spine and Pain Centers in August 2021. She finished her residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus in San Juan. Her Doctor of Medicine was completed at Ponce Health Sciences University in Puerto Rico. She earned a Bachelor of Science in biology-biomedical sciences from the University of Puerto Rico, Aguadilla Campus.

“Physical medicine and rehabilitation provides me the tools and resources to address different symptoms and conditions to help patients regain functionality, independence and elevate their quality of life to their utmost potential,” she said. “In simple words, this medicine field enables me to help people in the moment where they need it the most.”

Dr. Calderin maintains a multidisciplinary approach is needed when developing a treatment plan. “I understand there is a point where medication management may be the only option left to provide comfort to a person with chronic pain,” she said. “But I strongly believe in non-opioid management via a comprehensive treatment and multidisciplinary approach to help my patients regain their functionality, improve their quality of life and make them feel comfortable.”

An honest doctor-patient relationship where communication is key is crucial part of Dr. Calderin’s work. “I can address their concern and answer all their questions so they can make an informed decision with regards to their treatment,” she said.

Away from the office, Dr. Calderin can be found outdoors either enjoying a hike or spending the day at the beach. She also likes to stay home and watch a movie with her husband or spend time with her extended family.

Everyone is so nice and welcoming. I love my Dr (Calderin). You never wait long to go the back and once in a room it's a very short wait for the Doctor to come in. Treatments/Procedures are all explained in detail. Overall, I am very happy with my medical care at IMA.
