When interacting with patients, Dr. Guensley R. Delva applies his favorite quote from the late poet Maya Angelou. ‘I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.’

Dr. Delva knows every patient’s pain and concern is unique. “Your time with each patient is special and merits your undivided attention and respect,” he said. “(Treatment) plans should be formulated not only with their pain in mind, but with a keen understanding of improving functionality. As we work together, with a multi-modal approach, we will strive to make each encounter personally tailored to meet every patient’s needs.”

Joining the National Spine and Pain Centers in fall 2020, Dr. Delva brings not only a vast medical knowledge to his position but an educational background as well. Earning a Masters Degree in Education from Mercy College in New York, Dr. Delva started his professional career as a full time special needs public school teacher for the New York City Department of Education. While earning a Post Baccalaureate Certificate at Drexel University in Philadelphia, he served as a health advocate with duties including organizing fairs for the underserved Haitian community.

He notes his background as an educator played a heavy role in refueling his passion for engaging in a medical career that focuses on continuity of care and education.

Earning his Doctor of Medicine from Rutgers - Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey, he completed an Internship at Cooper University Hospital, Rowan University School of Medicine and an Anesthesiology residency at Montefiore Medical Center at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York.

The heavy procedural direction of Anesthesiology drew Dr. Delva to the field of Interventional Pain Medicine. “The nice blend of anatomy, physiology and pharmacology was an easy segue from Anesthesiology to Pain Medicine,” he said.

Dr. Delva completed an Interventional Pain Medicine fellowship at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Theodore Geisel School of Medicine in New Hampshire.

“I am excited about being in a field with a lot of innovative growth as it relates to interventional treatments to help minimize pain and, most importantly, improve function,” he said.
“...Knowing I am making a difference in the lives and functional outcomes of patients in the community where I live gives me a great sense of purpose.”

When not helping patients, Dr. Delva may be found traveling with his wife, watching films, exploring nature, appreciating new cuisines and playing as much golf as he can ​before the arrival of his first child​.
