Review Shows Success of Epidural Steroid Injections for Pain Related to Herniated Discs

Epidural steroid injections have been available for many years, but a recent large-scale review confirmed the significant benefits of such injections for the treatment of herniated discs and other debilitating pain conditions.

The review, published in the Pain Medicine Journal, found that epidural steroid injections were effective for each of the following:

  1. Reducing pain,
  2. Restoring function
  3. Reducing the need for other health care
  4. Avoiding surgery

The review focused on herniated discs, a problem with one of the rubbery cushions (discs) between the individual bones that make up the spine.

A herniated disc, also known as a slipped disc or ruptured disc, can irritate nearby nerves and result in pain, numbness or weakness in an arm or leg.

The review also focused on treatment with transforaminal injections, often referred to as “nerve blocks,” which describe how the needle is inserted into the epidural space near the spinal cord.

The large-scale review gleaned evidence from 39 publications that published multiple studies involving hundreds of patients who were successfully treated with epidural steroid injections for pain related to disc herniation.
