Edward S. Kim, DO
Dr. Kim began his medical career as a General Medical Officer in the US Army, treating numerous musculoskeletal, sports and spine-related conditions. His service also included a yearlong deployment to Iraq as the Battalion Surgeon of an infantry unit during which time he rendered medical care to military personnel in a remote aid station. For his efforts, Dr. Kim was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. Upon fulfillment of his active duty commitment in 2006 and having attained a wealth of medical experience in treating injuries involving the neck, back and joints of both office-based and urgent care patients, Dr. Kim subsequently completed his residency at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) followed by a fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.
Dr. Kim joined Capitol Spine & Pain Centers after finishing advanced fellowship training in Spine Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic where he enhanced his diagnostic acumen and procedural skills in the management of spinal conditions. In this capacity, he also developed a thorough understanding of what conditions involving the spine necessitate a surgical referral by having trained under world-renowned spine surgeons at the institution. His expertise encompasses diagnostic measures such as electromyography and extensive treatment modalities to include fluoroscopic-guided spinal procedures, percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation and peripheral joint injections, amongst other complementary interventions. Ultimately, Dr. Kim’s diverse medical background and multidisciplinary approach to acute and chronic pain conditions maximizes quality of life and well-being for his patients.
His interest in neck, back and musculoskeletal pain stems from his prior days as a competitive runner and continued adherence to working out regularly at the gym. Furthermore, he provided medical care at sporting events such as boxing and martial arts competitions during his time in the military in addition to his residency training years. His passions extend to following his hometown professional sports teams in Detroit (even the Lions), studying of the Korean language and spending time with his wife and son.
Dr. Kim is Board-certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and maintains active memberships in the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, North American Spine Society and International Spine Intervention Society.
