Capitol Spine & Pain Centers Physician Presents Breakthrough Regenerative Therapies for Musculoskeletal Pain Relief at National Workshop
Washington, D.C. – (August 18, 2009) Mayo F. Friedlis, MD, of Capitol Spine & Pain Centers®, the leading interventional pain practice in the Washington D.C. area for more than 30 years, served as a presenter at the American Association of Orthopedic Medicine (AAOM) Restorative Injection Therapy Workshops, held in Denver, CO., on August 14 & 15, 2009. Dr. Friedlis led workshops focusing on the treatment techniques that he has developed at Capitol Spine and Pain Centers over the past several years, including the utilization of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP).
More than 50 physicians from the United States, Canada, and Mexico, attended the workshops, focused on the utilization of PRP and stem cell injections. The conference allowed different practitioners from the U.S., and Canada to share their experiences on the application of these new techniques in a clinical setting, allowing patients to benefit from these state-of-the art technologies. Attendees also received promising new information on growth factor stimulation and release that may lead to regeneration of painful spinal discs and relief of inflammation associated with osteoarthritis of the knee.
Dr. Friedlis, who joined Capitol Spine & Pain Centers in 1983, is one of the few physicians trained to perform PRP therapy in the Washington D.C. area. PRP therapy relieves pain by rejuvenating injured tissues. For more than 15 years, PRP had been used primarily in the postoperative setting as a means of rapidly promoting the repair of incisions.
“Recently, the technique has shown exciting potential in the relief of inflammation associated with osteoarthritis of the knee, shoulder, hip and spine,” said Mayo F. Friedlis, MD, Managing Partner, Capitol Spine & Pain Centers. “In addition, ligament and tendon injuries, such as rotator cuff tears, plantar fasciitis, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries, pelvic instability, tennis elbow, ankle sprains and tendonitis can all be treated with this modality.”
“The concept behind PRP is actually quite simple,” continued Friedlis. “The body’s first response to soft tissue injury is to deliver platelet cells packed with growth and healing factors to the affected area. These platelets then attract stem cells to initiate the promote healing. PRP therapy intensifies the body’s natural restorative process by delivering a higher concentration of platelets to the affected area.”
The process requires a sample of an individual’s blood, which is then placed in a centrifuge that separates the platelets from other components. The concentrated platelets are then injected into and around the point of injury, jump-starting and strengthening the body’s natural curative signals. Because an individual’s own blood is used, the risk of transmissible infection is eliminated.
Capitol Spine and Pain Centers provides PRP therapy at all eight of its locations in Virginia and its newest location in the District of Columbia. PRP is one of a myriad of treatment options Capitol Spine & Pain Centers offers thousands of area residents, including innovative treatment alternatives like disc regeneration therapy, prolotherapy and PRP.
